Welcome to Aberconwy Conservatives

This post is also available in: Welsh

We especially want to hear your views so go straight to the new blog, and join in the debate. Or find out more about Aberconwy Conservatives and Guto Bebb on these pages.

A personal statement from Guto Bebb -

“ My name is Guto Bebb and I aspire to be your next MP and I understand that working for the people of Aberconwy is not something that you do in the four weeks prior to an election.  In my view it demands commitment and hard work and that is why I am out on the doorstep again this week.

Politics is not highly regarded at this point in time and that is no surprise.  We have a tired and failing government coupled with a discredited Parliament populated by some politicians who have behaved in an unacceptable manner.  Despite this I still believe that politics can make a difference.  I have been self-employed since I was 23 and I appreciate how hard people need to work to pay their bills, raise a family and attempt to plan for their futures.

Politics do matter, and the following are some examples of issues that only a new Government can deal with;

” The UK will borrow £175billion pounds this year alone.  One hundred and seventy five thousand million pounds!  That is more than the entire amount of income tax collected each year in the UK.  In 2010/11 we will borrow even more.  Do we have the right to rack up these debts expecting our children and grandchildren to pay them on our behalf?

” Spending on the NHS has increased by 300% since 1997.  Things have improved – I know since my family have benefited from the services of Ysbyty Gwynedd and Alder Hay and I am grateful.  But are things three times better that in 1997?  Do we need armies of administrators earning £50k, £100k and even more?  The NHS has improved but there is also substantial waste that needs to be addressed.

” What happened to our pensions?  In 1997 we had the largest Private Sector Pension Savings in Europe.  They have been taxed and attacked by Labour with over £100billion lost through tax changes.  We now have two types of workers.  Those in the Public Sector where all taxpayers fund their generous pensions and the vast majority who work in the Private Sector who will have a state pension of £90 per week with an average of some £40 on top from their own savings.  Is this fair?  Should the poor pay for the privileges of a few?

” In my view we need to put North Wales back on the map.  Cardiff seems to regard us as little more than a nuisance.  The Assembly must work for all of Wales and not just Cardiff Bay and the M4 corridor.

Finally some personal details:

I was the Conservative Candidate in 2005 when I managed, with your support, to substantially reduce the Labour majority.  Labour now has a majority of less than 500 over me in this constituency.

I have been married to Esyllt for sixteen years and we have five children.   I was born and brought-up in north Wales with both my parents hailing from Bangor.  I have worked in the area all my life.  I believe that we need a champion for north Wales – not another politician that will defend the status quo.  When the election is called I would be delighted if you could offer me your support.”

    Dear Sir,
firstly may I congratulate you on your recent success ,I personally have never voted for your party because it was a no no in the small town on Ynys Mon that I come from.
I was shocked at the tactics of Plaid Cymru in the run up to the election stories of them taking posters and any signage down in a undignified mannor.
I voted for you because I believe in you and as yourself I run a business from this area and I believe you understand more than any candidate about this.
The Plaid cymru candidate was more interested in my van and my che gavara top I was wearing than his parties policies.
Pob llwyddiant yn y dyfodol Guto,da iawn chdi sir.

  • Jocular:

I notice that on local issues you have not included crime. I would be interested to hear your views on the matter – especially on anti-social behaviour

    • Guto:

      Dear Jocular,

      I have discussed crime on many of my leaflets and also in the twenty public meetings that I have undertaken during the past year. It is an issue of real concern for many residents in all parts of Aberconwy. Mviews on these matters include;

      1. Reducing the amount of time spent by our police officers on paperwork – they need to be free to patrol our streets
      2. Allow Magistrates to deal with repeat offenders in a robust manner rather than depending on guidance from the government which increasingly ties their hands
      3. Treating anti-social behaviour seriously. In many cases such behaviour is criminality and should be dealt with as such. Yes, we need to ensure that there is support for young people and activities for them within our communities but behaviour which becomes criminality should not be tolerated.
      4. We need to ensure that prison as an option is not restriced simply because of a shortage of places.

I hope that the above responds to some of your concerns.

      Guto

  • Biggles:

    Hello Dear Chap
Good luck with all the campaign Just one questionette for you. What about the European working time directive. Will you safeguard the rights of workers? The paid holidays, maternity and paternity leave. Protect the minimum wage and increase it for all.
This will create a fairer society don’t you agree
    Thank you

  • Derek Beesley:

Good luck, Guto. You’ve worked hard for this moment and we all wish you success in your bid to be our next MP.
    Derek Beesley

Pob lwc Guto – dan ni gyd yn barod i wneud ein gorau glas i’ch helpu chi!

  • Anna Tandy:

Guto, even if I was not going to vote conservative I definately would now, having listened to the debate on Tudno FM. You were by far the most knowlegeable speaker, coherent and to the point. The use of slurs on pensioners by the Labour government and Ronnie Hughes as a political tool is one that is appalling and should be used to our advantage in canvassing. This was a great debate and should be played out in every available community centre in Aberconwy so that the voting public could make up their minds. I have stored it in my computer and will perhaps get people to listen to it again. Keep up the great work. As long as we the Conservatives hold up and bring to fruitition all that we have promised the people of Aberconwy we should have no doubt in believing that Great Britain will become Great again.

  • Guto:

    Dear Mr McFadden,

Thank you for your comment. Unlike my opponents I’m not a full time paid politician and still need to earn a living. Currently I campaign four times a week at considerable cost to my business but on Friday morning I had a prior engagement that I could not avoid.

Yes, it would have been great to be in Conwy but I’m an ordinary self-employed individual attempting to make a living and run a political campaign. I simply cannot cancel every single working day!

I hope the event went well and was a great success.

  • Peter McFadden:

    Hallo Mr. Bebb,
We missed you at the Conwy Seed Fair today. This is the biggest event in Conwy this side of the general election, and the ideal chance to meet the people of Conwy.
Don’t say you didn’t know about it. The Seed Fair has been held in Conwy every 26th March for over 700 years.

    • I believe that as Mr Bebb is fighting for his political seat this year in what may be a very hard fight, we cannot expect him to act as celebrity and visit every event that is on now before a General Election. Please give the man a break.
