Death of Mark Linkous

I was shocked to hear of the suicide of Mark Linkous yesterday.  He apparently killed himself on the 6th of March.

Leader of the band Sparklehorse he was a creative and innovative songwriter who dealt with the other side of the American dream.  I liked his music a lot and have listened to my vinyl versions of 'Good Morning Spider' and 'It's a Wonderful Life' with an added urgency last night and this evening.  His fragility is obvious in all his work.

The following is a great duet that he did with PJ Harvey.  A taster of what he had to offer.

Steve Eaves 3/10/09

Bu fy ngwriag yn hynod garedig gan brynu tocynnau i weld Steve Eaves yn fyw mewn sesiwn acwstig yn y CABAN.  Noson wych.  Oedd, roedd y Chablis yn dda ond yr oedd Steve a rhai pobol yn well.  Mae'n anrhydedd cael artist o'r fath yn byw ac yn perfformio'n lleol.

Os am wybod mwy am Steve triwch : http://www.myspace.com/steveeaves

My wife was kind enough to buy tickets to see Steve Eaves live in a session at CABAN.  It was a great night.  Yes, the Chablis was good but Steve and the band were better!  It's a privilege to have such an artist living and working in North Wales.

A Welsh Hundred : Ambrose Bebb / Marc Stengel

Er bod blog Yr Hen Rech Flin wedi rhoi sylw i gyfieithiad Marc Stengel o ddau o lyfrau fy nhaid , Ambrose Bebb, ddechrau Awst bu i mi ddal yn ôl rhag trafod y pwnc hyd nes i mi ddarllen y gyfrol.  Bellach yr wyf wedi gwneud hynny ac wedi cysylltu â Marc sydd ar daith trwy ganolbarth Cymru gan gynnwys ymweld â Thregaron a man geni fy nhaid.  Y mae Marc hefyd yn un da am ddenu sylw gan fod Y Cymro heddiw yn rhoi sylw teilwn iawn i’w waith o fewn yr adolygiadau llenyddol.

Yr wyf yn hynod o falch fod Marc wedi cyhoeddi’r llyfryn hwn a hefyd mae’n braf cael croesawu’r ffaith fod bwriad ganddo i gyfieithu sawl cyfrol arall o waith fy nhaid.  Dim ond gobeithio yr ydwyf y bydd yr ymdrech yma gan ddinesydd o’r UDA a Chanada i roi cynulleidfa newydd nad ydynt yn medru’r Gymraeg i waith Ambrose Bebb hefyd yn fodd o ail gyflwyno gwaith fy nhaid i Gymry Cymraeg.

Gyda thaith Marc yn ei ddenu i’r gogledd yr wythnos nesaf yr wyf yn edrych ymlaen yn fawr at ei gyfarfod.  Yr wyf ar ddeall hefyd ei fod am fynychu Cynhadledd Plaid Cymru yn Llandudno.  Fel un sydd wedi trwytho ei hun yn agweddau gwleidyddol Ambrose Bebb fe fydd hi’n ddiddorol gweld ymateb Marc i agweddau gwleidyddol Plaid Cymru heddiw o gymharu â’r rhesymau a’r rhesymeg arweiniodd fy nhaid i fod yn un o sylfaenwyr y blaid honno yn nauddegau'r ganrif ddiwethaf.

Pan fu i mi ymuno gyda’r Ceidwadwyr un sylw cyson a digon hyll a gafwyd gan aelodau pybyr y Blaid oedd y byddai fy nhaid yn troi yn ei fedd.  Wn i ddim am hynny, ond fel un sydd wedi darllen gwaith fy nhaid yr wyf yn weddol sicr na fyddai'n gyfforddus o fewn y Blaid sosialaidd fodern sy’n gwrthod arddel y gair Cymru yn ei henw ffurfiol.

This post is a brief discussion of the publication in English for the first time of two books written and published by my late grandfather in the 1940's. Marc Stengel who holds dual US and Canadian citizenship is the translator and he is currently on a walking tour of Wales which has included a visit to my grandfathers birthplace.  I'm hoping to meet him when his travels bring him to North Wales next week.

My grandfather, Ambrose Bebb, was a prolific writer and a figure of some standing in Welsh literary circles in the period between 1920 and his death in 1955.  In addition to his contribution to the literature of Wales he was also one of the founders of Plaid Cymru.  Time and again some Plaid supporters have said to me that my grandfather 'would be turning in his grave' at my decision to join the Conservative Party.  I'm not so sure.  In 1939/40 my grandfather broke with Plaid over the refusal of that party to support the war effort and I suspect that if he was to visit the Plaid conference in Llandudno this week he would be less than enamoured by the socialist party meeting at Venue Cymru who happen to call themselves Plaid.
