Flood Defences Hold On First Test

Despite the awful impact on some households in Trefriw as a result of overflowing culverts, it would appear that the new Conwy Valley flood defences passed their first test during the terrible weather we had in mid-November.
Guto Bebb said: “I was contacted by several local residents during the worst of the weather and despite some serious concerns that the village would be overwhelmed, it would appear that the worst damage was actually caused by the inability of the drainage system to deal with the deluge. I was also very impressed to hear such positive comments from residents about the intervention of the contractors who played a crucial part in ensuring that their pumps were used to reduce the risks of flooding to several properties.
Another lesson which needs to be learnt as a result of the events in November 2009 is that some action needs to be taken to deal with the significant amount of water running off the surrounding uplands which seems to be a continuing problem for the village even if the threat from the river has been reduced”.
